Lesson Plans

These lesson plans are provided to assist teachers in preparing instruction about the history and role of the vice president in national affairs, as well as the poltical process in the United States. They contain bibliographies, selected readings, discussion ideas, class activities, and writing prompts.

The lesson plans are in the Portable Document Format allowing you to view formatted documents and have greater control over printing. 1) Who? I've Never Heard of Him!

Objective: To give students factual information about men who have served as vice president and also to identify those who have gone on to serve as president.

2) What's Going On?

Objective: To place the lives of the vice presidents in historical context.

3) Did You See That Cartoon?!

Objective: To begin exploring the role the media plays in the political process through the use of political cartoons.

4) Vote!

Objective: To give students the experience of running a campaign during a mock election.

5) Developing A Campaign

Objective: To explore the media, promotion, and public relations role of a campaign.

6) Do I Make A Difference?

Objective: To give students a sense of ownership in the process of a national election, and an opportunity to ask candidates for position statements on issues important to the students.

7) Candidates In The Spotlight!

Objective: To help students develop critical viewing skills and evaluation criteria by watching the televised vice presidential debate and by creating written election predictions.

8) Who Won? Were We Right?

Objective: To help students critically analyze election results.
